May 14: Film legend and eternal Italian beauty Sophia Loren christened the new 92,400 gt MSC ORCHESTRA in a gala naming ceremony at Civitavecchia today. An identical twin to the MSC MUSICA (introduced last year), the ORCHESTRA is 964 feet long, has 5 restaurants (including a specialty Chinese restaurant and Italian upscale restaurant), 11 bars, a casino, a 12,400-square-foot-spacious spa and fitness area, 1,240-seat theater and carries 2,550 guests. She begins sailing 7-night Mediterranean itineraries roundtrip from Venice on June 2.
Meanwhile, back at Aker's St. Nazaire shipyard, it was announced MSC's newbuilding 133,000 gt sister to MSC FANTASIA (due in April of 2008), the SERENATA, will be renamed MSC SPLENDIDA in order to avoid any confusion with the new COSTA SERENA. The MSC SPLENDIDA (due in 2009) will have 1650 cabins and carry nearly 3,300 passengers.
