CDC rules Do NOT apply to US registered Pride of America
« on: October 10, 2008, 09:47:29 AM »
I noticed several weeks back that Pride of America was missing from the CDC scores.
I sent the CDC a email asking why and the reply was this:

Quote
Cruise ships that fall under CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program's
jurisdiction:
* Carry 13 or more passengers, and
* Have a travel route that includes both foreign and U.S. ports.

I sent a reply saying that Pride of Aloha still appeared on their site and the Pride of Hawaii and America used to appear and now were gone and asked why.
Their response this morning was this:

Quote
The Pride of America sails only in US waters around the Hawaiian islands
and therefore does not fall under the VSP jurisdiction.

Good to know that the public are being well served by the CDC. So by this I take it that the CDC rules apply to any other registered ship other than USA registered.

Does this mean US Coast Guard rules don't apply now to?

This can not be good as we will never know what is going on now.

I have received a further email this morning and it says this:

Quote
The Pride of America does not fall under the jurisdiction of CDC's Vessel Sanitation Program because the ship no longer sails internationally -- currently, it sails between the Hawaiian Islands. FDA is responsible for inspections on this vessel under the Interstate Travel Sanitation program. More information about this program can be found at http://www.fda.gov/ora/inspect_ref/igs/icsf.html.

Regards,

Vessel Sanitation Program

The FDA does the inspection's but I can not locate the scores now.

Why they have to make it tough to locate this stuff is beyond me.

That's scary.  So if you have a huge samonella outbreak or some virus, they can just wash their hands of it???

I have been looking since I posted this and I can NOT find the FDA score for this ship.

Is this just more US Gov't red tape? Who knows but it does nothing for the travelling public. I am more upset that they hold Foreign Flagged ships to what appears a higher standard by making it easy for the public to find those scores. Try and find a score under FDA for POA. In general US Flagged ships have scored lower than other countries. The interesting part about all this all US flagged ships used to appear on the CDC site. Since NCL started making noise the US Flagged scores disappeared of the CDC site.

I spent a good hour searching again today and nothing. I even looked in the State of Hawaii site for the scores and nothing.

I guess they don't want us to know.

I did find out though that if a ship registered in the US goes to foreign ports then it's score is listed on the CDC site.
